Former number one ranked amateur golfer and 6ft 1inch American golfer Oliver Frank Schniederjans showcased a masterclass in consistency to claim victory at the International Series India, held at the DLF Golf and Country Club. Schniederjans, who made his professional debut at the 2015 RBC Canada Open on the greens of Glenn Abbey Golf Club Oakville, Ontario finished at 10-under-par (278) and secured a four-stroke win over two-time US Open Major Champion Bryson DeChambeau, who made a valiant late charge but fell short.
The 31-year-old resident of Power Springs, Georgia Schniederjans known for his composed play under pressure, delivered identical rounds of 69 on all four days (71-69-69-69), and demonstrated remarkable steadiness on a challenging course. His triumph earned him a winner’s cheque of $360,000 along with 787.50 ranking points, further cementing his status as a rising force on the International Series circuit.
DeChambeau’s Late Surge Falls Short
Modesto, CA born and Grapevine, TX resident Bryson DeChambeau one of the tournament’s biggest names struggled in the middle rounds with scores of 72 and 74 but produced a scintillating final-round 65 to finish at 6-under-par (282). Despite his late resurgence, he finished in the second place with a prize of $220,000.
The Americas Share Third Place
Chilean Joaquin Niemann and Mexican Abraham Ancer shared third place at 2-under-par (286). Niemann started strong with rounds of 70 and 68 but faltered with a 77 on Saturday, while Ancer’s consistent play (72-71-71-72) ensured a solid finish. Both players earned $113,000 for their efforts.
Indian Golfers Shine at Home Event
India’s Anirban Lahiri led the charge among local players and finished tied for 10th at +2 (290). Despite a difficult third round where he carded a 79, Lahiri showed resilience with a brilliant final-round 68, and secured a strong finish in front of home fans. Gaganjeet Bhullar, India’s number one amateur in 2004 and 2006 and was part of the Indian team that won the silver medal at the 2006 Asian Games also made the cut and finished at +7 (295). Though he struggled in the closing stages, his consistent play over the first two days ensured he remained in contention. Youngster Veer Ahlawat delivered a commendable performance, ending at +9 (297), displaying flashes of brilliance on a demanding DLF Golf and Country Club course. Other Indian golfers, including Karandeep Kochhar and Manu Gandas, managed to make the cut but faced challenging conditions over the weekend, finishing outside the top 25.
But if any, this weekend in Gurgaon will be remembered for what 15 years old Indian amateur Kartik Singh achieved against an elite international field. Despite the challenging course and high-pressure environment, Singh carded rounds of 77, 71, 80, and 75, to finish with a total score of +15 (303). Singh’s performance, though not among the top of the leaderboard, speaks volumes about his promise as a future golfing star. Competing against seasoned professionals, he proved he belongs above the cut for many years to come.
Asia Rising – The Impact of the International Series
The International Series supported by the Asian Tour and bolstered by LIV Golf’s $300 million investment continues to serve as a premier stage for elite golfers worldwide. With elevated prize purses and a caliber of competition that rivals the best in the sport, I really wish this series catalyzes the expansion of golf across Asia and beyond. Gurugram’s esteemed DLF Golf and Country Club provided a formidable battleground and despite fog and clouds, it demanded both skill and resilience from the contenders.
As the International Series advances to its next Macau in March and Morocco in July, one would expect to see many potential unlocking prestigious opportunities including a coveted berth in the LIV Golf League. With Asia’s golfing landscape ascending to new heights, the International Series remains a positive conduit for ambitious professionals striving to carve their legacy in the sport.
