As the 2025-26 Indian Super League season prepares to kick off from 14 February 2026, East Bengal FC fans are bracing for one of the most intense and unpredictable campaigns in recent memory. A uniquely compressed league format, key injuries, fresh foreign signings, and mounting pressure on head coach Óscar Bruzón combine to make this season one of the most compelling in the club’s storied 106-year history.

The ISL Context: A Truncated, Ruthless Schedule

After months of uncertainty due to administrative and commercial challenges facing Indian football, the Indian Super League has confirmed a revised format that shuns the traditional double-round league and playoffs. Instead, each of the 14 clubs will play 13 matches in a single round-robin, home-and-away structure, meaning every game counts and there is no room for error. The team that finishes top of the table at the end of the league phase will be crowned champions — a drastic shift from previous seasons.

A total of 91 fixtures are scheduled across the season, running from mid-February through April/May, with FanCode providing live streaming coverage.

Injury Woes: Key Players Set to Miss Crucial Matches

East Bengal’s preseason build-up has been marred by several unfortunate injury setbacks that threaten to upset team rhythm from the outset:

  • Naorem Mahesh — the energetic midfielder who pulls strings in the middle of the park — has suffered a knee injury and is expected to miss the first two ISL matches, including the season opener against Northeast United FC.
  • Kevin Sibille, central to defensive stability, is sidelined with a major hamstring injury and is set for a lengthy layoff of at least six matches.
  • Mohamad Rakip was forced off late in a practice match against Mohammedan SC after requiring 8 stitches on his head, and his availability for the opener against Northeast United is now in serious doubt.

These absences greatly weaken Bruzón’s available options, particularly in defense and midfield leadership.

Transfer Market Activity: New Blood & Lingering Arrivals

East Bengal’s foreign recruiting has been a mixed bag entering this packed schedule.

Youssef Ezzejjari — The Fifth Foreigner Arrives

The most notable addition is Youssef Ezzejjari, registered as the club’s fifth foreign player. Arriving just weeks before the campaign, Ezzejjari comes off the back of a productive stint in the Singapore Premier League, where he scored 5 goals, including one as recently as 17 January before flying to Kolkata. His finishing ability could be a key asset upfront as the Red & Golds look to improve their goal ratio.

Anton Søjberg — Visa Delays Cloud Arrival

East Bengal have also reportedly signed Danish attacker Anton Søjberg, who is yet to arrive and is awaiting visa clearance with the season opener looming in just three days — a major logistical gamble given how tight the schedule and squad depth already is.

Meanwhile, foreign forwards Hamid Ahadad and Hiroshi Ibusuki have been replaced, leaving huge expectations on Ezzejjari and the rest of the new attacking cohort.

Tactical Shape: Potential Lineups & Formation

With injuries and transfer noise in the background, Oscar Bruzón’s tactical plans are starting to emerge:

  • Midfield Core: The foreign trio of Saúl Crespo, Miguel Figueira, and Mohammed Rashid are earmarked as the likely midfield engine, offering creativity, control, and work rate.
  • Attack: Ezzejjari — who is reportedly match-fit — is expected to spearhead the attack with support from dynamic wingers, with David Lalhlansanga as his backup who has scored in the practice matches when Youssef did not arrive yet.
  • Defensive Base: With Kevin unavailable, a centre-back pairing of Anwar Ali and Lalchungnunga offers physicality and aerial strength, backed by full-backs Jay Gupta at left and Jeakson Singh on the right until Rakip returns to become the first choice.

On the wings, proven talent Bipin Singh looks set to start on the left, while the right flank could be a tactical toss-up between Vishnu PV, Nandhakumar, or Jerry. Bruzón himself has publicly praised Nandha for his impactful performance — and a goal — in a recent friendly against Mohammedan, even though Vishnu started that match.

Once Mahesh and Rakip returns to the first eleven, Oscar Bruzon will have to shuffle and think whether to field a foreign midfield trio and use Mahesh as a wide winger or put Mahesh in the midfield three changing his preferred midfield combination. Along with that, Anton Søjberg once arrives, could provide Oscar with another attacking possibility to choose from and strengthen the bench.

One position of weakness which remains is the lack of fullback options, as there is indeed no direct replacement for both Jay Gupta on the left and Rakip on the right, which has been a cause of concern already with Rakip doubtful for the first match.

Bruzón Under Pressure: Near Misses

Bruzón’s recent managerial record shows promise yet also heartbreak, having led East Bengal to two finals — both lost-on penalties. In a truncated ISL season where goal difference and critical points matter immensely, those fine margins could again prove decisive. Oscar now has overseen the team for over a year and last year he missed the ISL top six by margins. With massive reinforcements this year and most other teams having let go their foreigners, the fan expectations are at an all time high for a title challenge.

Expectations & Challenges Ahead

With only 13 league matches, each fixture takes on the significance of a cup tie. There is absolutely no room for slips or long runs of poor form. East Bengal’s squad depth — already tested — is likely to be stretched, and how quickly the new signings integrate, particularly in the first few weeks, could determine whether the club pushes for a title or settles for mid-table stability.

The absence of playoffs adds both pressure and clarity: there are no second chances — only consistency from kick-off to the final match.

Key Dates to Watch

  • 14 Feb 2026 – ISL 2025-26 season kicks off, with East Bengal facing Northeast United FC on the 16th of Feb.
  • Match-weeks 1–6 – Critical period where Sibille’s absence and Søjberg’s arrival timing could heavily influence results.
  • 3 May 2026 — the all-important Kolkata Derby against Mohun Bagan Super Giants, which could be crucial in the title race.
  • End of League Phase – East Bengal must be in the top cluster to challenge for the title under the “no playoffs” system.

This season is shaping up to be a defining campaign for East Bengal — not just in results, but for squad building, coaching credibility, and the club’s stature in Indian football. With historic stature comes enormous expectation — and in 2026, every point will count more than ever.
