Four-time world champion Max Verstappen secured his second straight win with a Singapore victory after Malaysia, marking his 250th Grand Prix start.

Max Verstappen delivered a masterclass drive at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and took his maiden victory from pole. Before that, the Dutchman won the Sprint race from pole.

On the opening lap, Charles Leclerc made a strong start off the line, but Verstappen held firm to keep the lead into the first corner. The 29-year-old gradually extended his lead over the Monegasque over time. The Red Bull driver held the lead throughout the hot and humid race even though he experienced radio issues mid-race, while Leclerc took second and Kimi Antonelli unexpectedly claimed third.

The McLaren duo, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri secured fourth and fifth respectively, ahead of the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton. Meanwhile, Liam Lawson finished in P7 with Audi’s Nico Hulkenberg taking P8. George Russell and Isack Hadjar secured P9 and P10 respectively, fighting their way up after starting from the back of the grid due to engine penalties.

Three drivers retired from the race with Audi’s Gabriel Bortoleto with a gearbox issue, Alpine’s Franco Colapinto experiencing driveline problem and Lance Stroll.

As It Happened

The race weekend started with a dramatic win by Verstappen in the rain-affected Sprint, before he secured his first pole at this circuit.

On Sunday, it was hot and humid, with no sign of rain. Russell dropped back to P19 due to an engine penalty. Meanwhile, Hadjar started from the pit lane after taking a penalty for additional power unit elements. After experiencing car troubles, the Frenchman had been eliminated in Q1. The Red Bull driver was joined in the pit lane by the Aston Martin duo, Alonso and Stroll. The two-time world champion had taken a penalty for a new power unit component, while his teammate’s car had been modified under Parc Ferme conditions.

After the lights went out, the Monegasque tried to take the lead but failed as the Dutchman cut across to hold the position. Lawson moved into P7, while Hulkenberg and Sainz made their way into the top 10 in eighth and 10th respectively. The Haas duo got into a fight for P11; as a result, Bearman overtook Ocon on lap 3.

Having started from the back of the grid, Russell made his way up to 13th place after overtaking Lindblad on lap 7. Bortoleto triggered a Virtual Safety Car when he pulled off the track towards the pit lane due to a gearbox issue; the VSC ended once the car had been pushed into the team’s garage.

Lap by lap, Verstappen was gaining time on Leclerc; meanwhile, his Red Bull teammate Hadjar overtook Sergio Perez for P17. A few laps later, Russell passed  Sainz for P12, making his way to catch the Haas pair.

Hamilton started the race on medium tyres, which caused him to lose a bit of a time; as a result, Antonelli started to catch him, with the McLaren pair not far behind.

On lap 19, Ferrari pitted the seven-time world champion for soft tyres; the Briton rejoined the race in P7 behind Lawson. Two laps later, Hamilton passed the Racing Bulls driver.

Mercedes informed the Italian driver over the team radio about exceeding track limits twice at Turn 2. Meanwhile, the other Mercedes driver overtook Ocon for P11.

The championship leader was called into the pits on lap 24 for medium tyres, coming out in P6 right behind Hamilton. On the very next lap, the Monegasque pitted and rejoined in P4 behind Norris.

On lap 30, Gasly pitted and came back out in P13. On the same lap, Colapinto pulled off the track with a suspected driveline issue. Hulkenberg pitted next and returned in P10, allowing Russell to move up to ninth.

“I feel something leaking between my feet,” Antonelli reported over the radio. Meanwhile, the four-time world champion made his stop and retained the lead. Norris also headed towards the pits and rejoined in P6 behind Antonelli.

Piastri pitted next on lap 34. The Aussie suffered a slightly slow stop and rejoined the race in P6. On the same lap, Bearman pitted, promoting Russell to P7. The Briton was the only driver in the top 10 yet to make a pit stop.

The Italian youngster reported over the team radio,“ Check the car, I had weird behaviour last corner”. The team replied,“no concern”.

A yellow flag was displayed when Stroll stopped at Turn 15 due to a clutch issue; subsequently, the Virtual Safety Car was deployed. Both Leclerc and Antonelli headed into the pits for a second stop, rejoining in P3 and P5 respectively and Hamilton stayed out. However, when Russell pitted for the first time, the VSC was ending, meaning he couldn’t benefit from it and dropped down to P10.

Piastri pitted for the second time on lap 42 to take on soft tyres, returning to the track in sixth. Leclerc passed Hamilton on lap 46 for P2 on his fresher tyres. Two laps later, George Russell overtook Gasly to claim P9.

On lap 52, the Dutchman had under a 10-second lead over Leclerc. Verstappen was facing issues with his radio, struggling to hear his race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, asking if he was interested in pitting under another Safety Car.

Hamilton’s podium hopes evaporated as Norris and Antonelli chased him for P3. When the seven-time world champion went wide defending his position against Norris, Antonelli took advantage and passed the McLaren driver. A few moments later, the championship leader also swept through to claim third.

As Hamilton continued to struggle on his tyres, Norris soon overtook the Briton to snatch fourth place. Meanwhile, Russell remained stuck behind Hulkenberg in P9. Norris was unable to catch Antonelli and asked over the team radio if he could help his teammate, while Piastri was trying to get past Hamilton. On the last lap, Piastri finally passed Hamilton after several attempts.

Four-time world champion Max Verstappen took the chequered flag first, with Leclerc and Antonelli finishing in second and third respectively.
