Mohun Bagan find themselves in a situation which is not suited at the club. Some topsy-turvy performances, both in the Indian Super League and Durand Cup, have raised eyebrows about the problems which exist at the current setup. Jose Molina has been here for just more than a month and he might be a little worried looking at things going on within the team given their poor start in the Indian Super League (ISL).
In this article, we will address some problems Jose Molina needs to fix defensively.
Build a good defensive duo
The departure of Anwar Ali has created a lot of problems for the Bagan backline. It has mainly disrupted the entire balance of the defensive third. Yes, Anwar did commit mistakes last season, so did Hector Yuste or Brendan Hamill. But that can’t justify Ali’s absence.
Jose Molina has kept his faith on young Dippendu Biswas. Biswas is young and needs time. Expecting a top-notch output from him this season means living in utopia. He will give results but only when he is complemented by a good foreign defender. Tom Aldred has been trying his best, but perhaps he’s not an upgrade from Yuste or Hamill. Nuno Reis is the player Molina will look out for if he’s registered for the ISL campaign.

When there’s an inexperienced, young kid playing in the most important position, it is necessary to provide him with a proper support. Molina can look for that in Reis.
Bring in a foreign CDM
Mohun Bagan are leaking in a lot of goals and the best way to stop that is brining in a proper foreign defensive midfielder. Why is Greg Stewart, Dimitri Petratos and Sahal Abdul Samad in the same team? You have two creative outlets in Petratos and Sahal, then why come you bring in Greg Stewart to overload the attacking third? For the AFC Champions League Two? Okay. Register Stewart there and bring in a defensive midfielder.

As mentioned earlier, Mohun Bagan have a relatively new defensive duo. The combination between them will take time. In such a situation if there’s continuous pressure on them, then how will they cope with it? There will be a breakdown at some point. Maybe now the management can feel the absence of Carl McHugh and the role he played in the ISL winning teams.
Of course, Apuia is a brilliant player, but look how he played in Mumbai City FC! He was complemented by either Yoell van Nieff of Rostyn Griffiths. The same Apuia now looks under pressure. Mohun Bagan Super Giant needs to bring in a new foreign defensive midfielder which will enhance Apuia’s quality and his performances would be better than he did at his former clubs.
