In one of the most heated rivalries in Indian football, East Bengal’s decision to hastily install new coach Oscar Bruzon in the dugout without a single training session with the team ahead of their derby clash against Mohun Bagan Super Giant has only worsened an already dire situation.

With a 2-0 defeat, the Red and Gold Brigade slumped to their seventh consecutive loss in all competitions, raising serious concerns about the state of the club both on and off the field.

The decision to have Bruzon take charge, despite only arriving late in the previous night, speaks of desperation and poor planning on the part of the management. East Bengal is enduring one of their worst seasons in recent memory, rooted at the bottom of the Indian Super League (ISL) table with zero points from their first five matches.

The team’s confidence has plummeted, fitness is in shambles, and injuries have ravaged the squad, making Bruzon’s task a Herculean one, even if he had proper preparation time.

A Sinking Ship

East Bengal’s problems run far deeper than tactics or coaching changes. The team is physically and mentally depleted. Reports indicate that half the squad is dealing with injuries, and the players who do take the field are only capable of sustaining intensity for about 60 minutes before fatigue sets in. In modern football, where fitness and endurance play an integral role, this is a recipe for disaster.

The morale in the squad seems to be at an all-time low. Confidence appears shattered, and when a team walks into a derby clash with such psychological baggage, the result is often predetermined. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, with a far superior squad and the momentum of a successful start to their campaign, capitalized on East Bengal’s vulnerability. The result was a routine 2-0 win, with East Bengal barely putting up a fight.

The Cuadrat Conundrum

Much of East Bengal’s current situation can be traced back to Carles Cuadrat’s ill-fated tenure. Cuadrat, who was given the longest preseason in recent East Bengal history, failed spectacularly to prepare the team for the rigors of the ISL. Despite having two months to shape the squad, Cuadrat left a team bereft of tactical discipline, physical fitness, or even basic match readiness.

It is baffling how a coach with so much time to prepare could leave the team in such disarray. Whether it was his inability to connect with the players or a failure to properly assess and address the squad’s shortcomings, the reality is that Cuadrat’s tenure did more harm than good.

Under his watch, the team has regressed, and the new coach now faces an uphill task to fix a crumbling structure.

More Than Just a Tactical Fix

Oscar Bruzon’s arrival is seen by some as a last-ditch effort to salvage the season, but the problems at East Bengal run deeper than tactics. While Bruzon is a competent coach with a decent track record, it’s unlikely that a mere tactical switch can reverse East Bengal’s fortunes.

The team’s physical conditioning is arguably its biggest issue; a squad that can only maintain competitive levels for an hour is bound to struggle, no matter the strategy.

The injury crisis also poses a serious challenge. With so many key players sidelined, Bruzon’s options are limited, and the burden on the fit players increases.

It is difficult for a team to build momentum when they are constantly reshuffling the lineup due to injuries, and that lack of continuity is reflected in their performances on the pitch.

Beyond the fitness and tactical issues, the mental state of the squad needs addressing. After seven straight losses, the players are likely questioning their own abilities and the direction of the club.

Instilling belief in this group, motivating them to fight through the adversity, is perhaps the most challenging aspect of Bruzon’s new role.

Looking Forward

As East Bengal languishes at the bottom of the ISL table, it’s clear that the club is in crisis. The next two weeks will be critical for Oscar Bruzon as he tries to stabilize the ship with a trip to Odisha in two days and Bhutan for the AFC Challenge League. His immediate focus should be on improving the team’s fitness levels and rebuilding morale. Without these foundational elements in place, no tactical tweaks will be enough to save their season.

For now, East Bengal fans are left frustrated and heartbroken, watching their beloved team in free fall. Unless drastic improvements are made in both fitness and mentality, it is difficult to see where their next win will come from.

The management’s impulsive decision to throw Bruzon into the fire of a high-stakes derby, without adequate preparation, only highlights the chaotic state of the club.
