East Bengal FC’s home fixture against NorthEast United FC on November 29 is not just another game—it’s a battle for redemption. Without a win in seven ISL matches this season, and with two key wingers, Naorem Mahesh and Nandhakumar Sekar, suspended, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Oscar Bruzon’s side. Adding to the challenge is NorthEast’s prolific striker Alaaeddine Ajaraie, who has been unstoppable this season, netting 11 goals in nine games.

However, East Bengal’s valiant display in their previous outing—a 0-0 draw against Mohammedan Sporting despite playing with nine men for over 70 minutes—provides a ray of hope. The 20-day gap between games has also allowed the squad to recover, regroup, and strategize.

Here’s how East Bengal can rise to the occasion and end their winless streak.

Defensive Foundation: Relying on Lalchungnunga and Company

The performance of Lalchungnunga against Mohammedan showcased the defender’s growing confidence and importance to the team. With his form improving, and the experienced Hector Yuste now fit again, Bruzon has a strong defensive core to work with. Anwar Ali, who has been reliable all season, is likely to pair with either Yuste or Hijazi Maher in central defense.

At right fullback, Nishu Kumar, Provat Lakra, or Mohamed Rakip will contend for spots to ensure both defensive solidity and attacking support. Neutralizing Ajaraie will require defensive compactness and smart positioning, denying him the space to exploit gaps behind the backline.

A man-marking strategy on Ajaraie could also be considered, with one of the central defenders staying tight to him throughout the game.

Midfield Battle: Saul and Souvik to Control the Game

The midfield will be East Bengal’s engine room, with Saul expected to lead from the center. His composure and passing range make him indispensable. Alongside him, Souvik Chakrabarti, who has displaced record signing Jeakson Singh in recent games, adds energy and defensive cover.

For attacking creativity, Madih Talal will play a pivotal role as the No. 10, connecting the midfield with the forward line. Talal’s ability to find pockets of space and create chances will be critical, especially with two first-choice wingers unavailable.

Replacing Mahesh and Nandhakumar: Exploring Wing Options

The absence of Naorem Mahesh and Nandhakumar Sekar leaves Bruzon with a tricky dilemma. Youngster P. V. Vishnu is a likely starter on one flank, bringing speed and directness to East Bengal’s attack.

On the opposite wing, Bruzon may deploy Talal, who has experience playing wide from his time at Punjab FC, despite preferring a central role. Alternatively, Bruzon could experiment with a 4-3-3 formation, pushing Talal and Vishnu into a front three alongside Dimitrios Diamantakos.

Another tactical shift could see a 4-4-2 setup, with Talal and Vishnu operating as traditional wide midfielders and Diamantakos pairing with David Lalhlansanga upfront. This would increase East Bengal’s attacking presence in the box and provide more options for crosses and through balls.

The flexibility of switching to a 4-3-3 formation offers another avenue for Bruzon. In this setup, Jeakson and Souvik can act as a double pivot, with Saul positioned slightly forward as a box-to-box midfielder. This formation allows Talal, Diamantakos, and Vishnu to form a fluid front three, emphasizing quick transitions and overloads on the wings.

However, a 4-4-2 system would cater to East Bengal’s need for defensive solidity while maintaining a strong attacking threat. It provides the option to go direct and exploit any gaps in NorthEast’s defensive setup.

Attacking Intent: Fast Start and High Press

Given their dire need for points, East Bengal must come out firing. A fast start with high pressing could unsettle NorthEast and potentially lead to an early goal. The attacking duo of Diamantakos, Talal and Lalhlansanga or Vishnu will need to work in tandem, making intelligent runs to stretch the opposition defense.

The fullbacks, particularly Nishu Kumar, if fit to start, can also play a key role by providing width and delivering accurate crosses into the box. Vishnu and Talal must track back to assist defensively, ensuring East Bengal maintains balance during transitions.

Stopping Ajaraie: A Collective Effort

Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s remarkable consistency—scoring in every game this season—makes him NorthEast United’s primary threat. East Bengal must adopt a collective approach to limit his influence. The defenders should avoid engaging in unnecessary duels and instead focus on positioning to cut off passing lanes to the striker.

Additionally, the midfield must press aggressively to disrupt the service to Ajaraie. Forcing NorthEast to play wide and deliver crosses, rather than through balls, can minimize his opportunities to score.

Why Three Points Are Crucial?

East Bengal’s current position at the bottom of the table leaves no room for error. A win against NorthEast is imperative, not just for morale but also to revive their campaign. The team has shown glimpses of resilience, particularly in their previous outing, and with the 20-day preparation window, they should be well-drilled and motivated.

Oscar Bruzon’s tactical decisions will determine whether East Bengal can exploit NorthEast’s vulnerabilities while keeping their potent attack at bay. It’s a daunting challenge, but one that East Bengal must rise to if they are to turn their season around.

With the passionate home crowd behind them, East Bengal must deliver a performance worthy of their rich legacy. A win against an in-form NorthEast United could be the turning point they desperately need.
