East Bengal’s journey from despair to determination continues to unfold as Oscar Bruzon’s rejuvenated side claimed their second consecutive victory in the Indian Super League (ISL), defeating Chennaiyin FC 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Goals from P. V. Vishnu and Jeakson Singh in the second half secured a crucial win, marking the team’s third consecutive clean sheet and lifting them from the bottom to 11th in the table.

After a dismal start to the season, where the Red and Gold Brigade went winless in their first seven matches, Bruzon has orchestrated a remarkable turnaround. With a newfound defensive solidity, improved fitness, and a revitalized mentality, East Bengal are finally showing signs of a team capable of competing at the highest level.

Oscar Bruzon’s arrival has not only brought tactical adjustments but also instilled a never-say-die attitude within the squad. The players look sharper, fitter, and mentally stronger, showcasing the ability to battle for every ball and stay focused for the full 90 minutes.

The turning point came in their hard-fought 0-0 draw against Mohammedan Sporting, where East Bengal played with nine men for over 70 minutes and still managed to keep a clean sheet. That resilience carried over into their first win of the season against NorthEast United and has now been solidified with another commanding performance against Chennaiyin FC.

The Chennaiyin Triumph: A Tactical Masterclass

Bruzon’s tactical flexibility was on full display against Chennaiyin, as he deployed a 4-4-2 system with Mahesh and Vishnu on the wings, Dimitrios Diamantakos and Madih Talal up front, and Saul Crespo and Souvik Chakrabarti controlling the midfield.

While the first half remained a cagey affair, the second half saw East Bengal burst into life:

Vishnu’s Brilliance: The youngster, who has emerged as one of the team’s standout performers, delivered another relentless display on the left wing, capping it off with a well-taken goal to break the deadlock. Apart from the goal, Vishnu kept running tirelessly on the left wing even dropping down to track-back and help Provat Lakra defensively.

Jeakson’s Breakthrough: Jeakson came on as a substitute for injured Saul Crespo and proved why East Bengal paid a record transfer fee for him in the summer. Filling in as a midfield enforcer, Jeakson Singh scored the second goal, sealing the victory and further emphasizing East Bengal’s growing confidence. Apart from his goal, Jeakson won every second ball in the midfield helping Oscar Bruzon’s side to control the last quarter of the match efficiently.

Cleiton Silva’s Impact: Coming off the bench in the second half, Cleiton Silva orchestrated both goals with his creative play and intelligent movement, offering a glimpse of the depth Bruzon now has at his disposal. His legs may have lost a yard or two of pace that he had at his prime however, his commitment to the game and to his team remains unquestionable.

Defensive Steel: Three Clean Sheets in a Row

East Bengal’s defense, which leaked goals in the early part of the season, has become one of their biggest strengths under Bruzon.

The Anwar-Maher Partnership: With Hector Yuste sidelined due to injury, the pairing of Anwar Ali and Hijazi Maher at center-back was rock solid, neutralizing Chennaiyin’s counter-attacking threats. Apart from two lapses in the first half, East Bengal defence successfully contained Daniel Chima Chukwu and then Wilmar Jordan Gil, especially in the second half.

Full-Back Excellence: Rakip and Provat Lakra were instrumental on the flanks, balancing their defensive duties with occasional attacking forays. The fullback pairing contained Irfan Yadwad and Farukh Chaudhary from cutting inside and pushed them wide to only deliver crosses which Anwar and Hijazi successfully dealt with.

Team Discipline: The entire squad’s commitment to tracking back and maintaining shape has been crucial in securing three consecutive clean sheets, a rare feat for the team in recent years. Adding to the back four, the role of Souvik Chakrabari remains crucial as a destroyer in the midfield. In the second half when East Bengal took the lead, Souvik elevated his performance to control the midfield, absolutely winning every second ball that was there to be won and helped the team control the tempo of the game.

Challenges Ahead: Saul’s Injury and the Odisha Clash

While the victory against Chennaiyin is a reason to celebrate, East Bengal now face a fresh challenge. Saul Crespo, a key figure in the midfield, suffered a hamstring injury and is set to miss the next couple of games. His absence leaves a gap in the team’s chemistry and raises questions about how Bruzon will adapt his lineup.

The upcoming match against Odisha FC on December 12 is another must-win fixture. With 15 games remaining in the season, East Bengal must continue to build on their momentum to climb into playoff contention.

Oscar Bruzon’s impact goes beyond tactics. His leadership has revitalized a squad that looked broken at the start of the season. Key elements of his approach include:

1. Fitness and Resilience: The players now have the stamina to press and compete throughout the match.

2. Defensive Solidity: A well-organized backline has become the foundation of their recent success.

3. Youth Development: Players like Vishnu have been given opportunities to shine and are repaying Bruzon’s faith with match-winning performances.

A New Dawn for East Bengal

Undefeated since the AFC Challenge League campaign and with two wins and a draw from their last three matches in the Indian Super League, East Bengal have finally begun to turn their season around. They now sit 11th in the table with 7 points, just within reach of the teams above them. The journey to the top six will be long and challenging, but with Bruzon at the helm, the Red and Gold Brigade have shown they are up for the fight.

As the team gears up for the Odisha clash, fans will hope that this resurgence marks the start of a new chapter in East Bengal’s storied history.
