East Bengal has officially signed Ghana Women’s National Team vice-captain Elshaddai Acheampong on a one-year contract, FieldVision can exclusively confirm. The experienced forward, who had parted ways with Cypriot side Apollon Ladies FC to sign through mutual termination, is set to strengthen East Bengal’s attack for the upcoming Indian Women’s League (IWL) season.
Acheampong is no stranger to Indian football. She played a vital role in Gokulam Kerala’s triumphant 2021-22 IWL campaign under the guidance of coach Anthony Andrews. Her return to India reunites her with Andrews, who recently took over as East Bengal’s head coach. The coach’s familiarity with Acheampong’s style of play and leadership qualities was pivotal in sealing the deal.
A source close to the club shared, “Elshaddai is a proven performer and a leader on the field. Coach Andrews was keen on having her in the squad because of her ability to deliver in high-pressure situations. She has the experience, and more importantly, the hunger to succeed. The club is confident that she’ll make a big impact in the IWL this season.”
It was her last stint in India with the Gokulam Kerala stint that got her the Apollon ladies deal and she has played 2 seasonwith the Cypriot side winning the Cypriot first division title twice. At Apollon, she was the teammate of Manisha Kalyan and had played UEFA Women’s Champions League (UWCL).
Acheampong brings an impressive résumé, having played in competitive leagues across Europe and Africa. Known for her sharp attacking instincts and versatility, she is expected to be a key figure for East Bengal as they aim to make a strong statement in this year’s IWL.
Acheampong’s numbers speak for themselves. In the 44 games with the Cyprus side she has an impressive 39 Goals and assist to her name
With the IWL set to begin on January 10, East Bengal fans eagerly await Achempong’s debut. Her signing not only strengthens the team but also a statement that East Bengal means business and will do anything to win the prestigious title.
