The 20-time English Premier League winners have finished their worst league season ever, at 15th place. It takes a lot of improvement from the management team in every way for a team as excellent and historic to fall so far down the league standings.
Even though the Reds had such a rough and upsetting season, Ruben Amorim managed to get Matheus Cunha from Wolves for a respectable amount of money, his first acquisition of the year. Many managers left United following the Fergie Era, and many players who were supposed to be the finest in the world lost their skills. Due to all of these factors, the team has been humiliated daily and will not be playing in Europe next season.
The issue now is whether the new players, particularly Cunha, Bruno Fernandes’ international teammate, can be crucial to the Manchester United system. But we will see further in this article whether he can guide the team through this crisis.
First and foremost, United is now short on viable possibilities to fill one of the offensive roles behind the striker in the manager’s favoured 3-4-2-1 formation, as Alejandro Garnacho is expected to depart the team this summer. Although both Mason Mount and Amad have displayed encouraging indications of stepping up, they have both struggled with injuries, and Bruno Fernandes, should he decide to stay with the team during the transfer window, needs more dependable assistance since he has taken on the creative load.
Cunha’s reliable productivity, adaptability, and availability make him the ideal candidate. He would feel at ease playing from the left-sided No. 10 position at United, as the graphic below illustrates, but he is equally content to take up positions on the opposing side and play up front as an all-out center-forward.
Since joining Wolves two and a half years ago, he has also played over 70% of all available Premier League minutes, with just a few minor impact injuries and disciplinary concerns keeping him out of the starting lineup.
Cunha is one of the top flight’s most direct attackers and is always eager to push forward in whichever capacity he plays. United severely lacks this profile since they rely too heavily on Fernandes’ optimism and skill to initiate plays with more daring deep passes.
Cunha’s experience playing in a similar 3-4-2-1 formation under Pereira and Gary O’Neil is another fantastic advantage of getting him.
However, Cunha’s two-footed unpredictability, dynamic running, and goal-scoring sense around the box are more valuable to his new team than they presently have in that No. 10 position.

Although Cunha only attempts 26 of his 209 Premier League shots with his left foot, he is not very productive on his weaker side. However, the above finish and a spectacular curling effort from the edge of the box at Anfield this season highlight the menace.
With a league-high five goals from outside the box, he has significantly outperformed in front of goal this season, with just Chris Wood and Bryan Mbeumo scoring more cleanly than his predicted goals.
Cunha’s optimism and willingness to lead the club up the pitch, however, can only serve to give an uninspiring front line some conviction, even if his goal total declines against United.
Cunha was sent off against Bournemouth in the FA Cup after spotting the red mist, raising concerns about disciplinary issues. Additionally, he was suspended following a fight with a staff member during an Ipswich game. Away from the cameras, it will be important to see if United can manage such tantrums and incorporate him into a cohesive dressing room.
There aren’t many players in the Premier League as self-assured as him, and United needs someone who is prepared to step up and accompany Fernandes to put some authority on a faltering assault.
