New Delhi, August 3, 2025 — The second edition of the Delhi Premier League (DPL) got off to a blockbuster start on August 2 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, as South Delhi Superstarz and East Delhi Riders set the tone for the season with a gripping contest that went down to the final ball. A high-octane opening ceremony featuring electrifying performances by Sunanda Sharma, Raftaar, KRSNA, and Seedhe Maut added to the celebratory atmosphere.

The grand event was graced by prominent dignitaries, including Delhi Chief Minister Smt. Rekha Gupta, former Union Cabinet Minister Smt. Smriti Irani, DDCA President Shri Rohan Jaitley, and BCCI Vice-President Shri Rajeev Shukla, reflecting the growing stature of the league in India’s cricketing calendar.

Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said:

“I convey my heartfelt wishes to all the teams and players. May this tournament be a celebration of talent, teamwork, and sporting spirit. I look forward to witnessing some exciting cricket and hope the event inspires the youth of our city to pursue excellence in sports.”

DDCA President Rohan Jaitley added:

“The second season of the Delhi Premier League officially begins today, and it marks another significant step forward in nurturing local cricketing talent. I extend my best wishes to all the teams and players. May the league continue to grow in stature and provide a strong platform for emerging stars to shine.”

A Match to Remember

The on-field action lived up to the occasion. South Delhi Superstarz, after winning the toss, posted a competitive 169/6 in 20 overs. Despite an early setback with Kunwar Bidhuri falling in the first over, Sarthak Ray (41 off 35)* and Ayush Badoni (25 off 20) stabilized the innings. A middle-order wobble saw them reduced to 82/5, but a late surge led by Vision Panchal (29 off 15) and a powerful finish from Abhishek Khandelwal (40 off 23)* ensured a strong total on the board.

In response, East Delhi Riders got off to a steady start with Arpit Rana (20 off 15) and Sujal Singh (11 off 18) before both fell in quick succession. The chase gained momentum through a composed partnership between skipper Anuj Rawat and Hardik Sharma, with Sharma adding a useful 27 off 23. Rawat then anchored the innings with a match-defining 55 off 35, while Mayank Rawat (30 off 20) added crucial runs in the middle overs.

With 15 runs needed off the final over, Rohan Rathi and Kavya Gupta showcased nerves of steel. In a dramatic finish, Rathi smashed a six off the final delivery, sealing a thrilling 5-wicket win for the Riders and igniting the tournament in style.

The DPL 2025 opener delivered on every front — glamour, grit, and game-changing moments — promising a riveting season ahead. As Delhi’s premier T20 league grows in scale and talent, it continues to be a powerful platform for local stars to make their mark on the national cricketing map.
