18-year-old prodigious right-arm pacer Udhav Mohan showed clever traits in his debut game for Purani Delhi.
He was tactical with his bowling, targeting specific channels, reading the batters’ footwork during his delivery stride, and adjusting the trajectory of his length. He consistently hit a good to 4m length and used variations to outthink and trap batters. For example, he set up two left-handers, Siddhant Sharma and Harsh Tyagi, deceiving them with his variations—both were caught at short leg. His seam delivery also drew an edge from Shivam Sharma, who couldn’t react to the length, pace, and bounce outside the off stump.
In his first game, he exhibited his potential as a clever bowler who can adapt to slow conditions. He had been one of the top performers at the age-group level for Delhi, taking 10 wickets in 6 matches at an average of 20.85 and an economy rate of 3.85. This made him the leading wicket-taker for Delhi in the Cooch Bihar Trophy and the 20th highest wicket-taker in the tournament. His performance helped him earn a reward in the Delhi Premier League, where Purani Delhi bought him for 6.60 lakh in the DPL auction.
In official interviews with Field Vision, we learned about Udhav reaction to the game and his journey.
Thought on the game:
Udhav Mohan: Udhav: In today’s game, we performed quite well with the ball, but we could have certainly done better in batting. The wicket slowed down and the ball was turning. We could have improved in both batting and bowling and definitely we made some minor mistakes with the ball. As a team, we will try to rectify it.
On His Indiviual Performance:
Udhav Mohan: cricket is never easy. The wicket was helpful for bowlers, so hitting the right length and on the spot bowling suited the conditions, and my variations made it even more effective. A performance like this gives you confidence in your skills – you just have to back yourself. I’m feeling very confident now.
How did he get into cricket:
Udhav Mohan: My inspiration was my father. Initially, I wasn’t interested, but seeing his passion for the game, I started playing cricket. Slowly and gradually, I developed an interest in it. Thanks to hard work. I’m here today.
About his Cricket Journey and the Role of Coaches:
I started my career at the West Delhi Cricket Academy and I’m still part of it under Rajkumar Sharma’s guidance. The academy has played a significant role in my development as a cricketer.
With the Purani Delhi team, Vijay Dahiya has been a constant source of motivation. He has always encouraged me to keep backing my strengths and has been very supportive throughout. Both coaches have provided valuable learning lessons that have helped me improve my game.
