The Salt Lake Stadium witnessed a frustrating evening for the home supporters as East Bengal FC were held to a goalless draw by a disciplined and tactically organised FC Goa side led by Manolo Marquez.
While East Bengal dominated possession and registered close to twenty attempts on goal, the final result told a familiar story—plenty of effort, but very little cutting edge where it mattered the most. For head coach Oscar Bruzon, the night raised several tactical questions as his side once again struggled to break down a compact defensive block.
Here are five crucial talking points from the stalemate at Salt Lake.
1. No Plan B Against Goa’s Defensive Wall
One of the biggest concerns from the match was East Bengal’s lack of an alternative attacking plan.
FC Goa arrived with a clear strategy: close down East Bengal’s creative outlet Miguel Figueira and force the hosts to attack from less dangerous areas. The plan worked almost perfectly.
Miguel was marked tightly throughout the match, leaving him with little space to operate between the lines. Without their primary playmaker influencing the game, East Bengal found themselves repeatedly attempting long-range shots or wide crosses that rarely threatened the Goa defense.
What stood out even more was the complete absence of central penetration. Not once did East Bengal manage to create a meaningful attack through the middle of the pitch.
Instead, the attacks became predictable. Crosses from the wings and speculative efforts from distance became the default approach, making it easier for Goa’s defenders to deal with the pressure.
For a team aspiring to challenge for the title, the inability to adapt when the primary tactical plan fails is a worrying sign.

2. Familiar Story: Missed Chances Cost Points Again
If there was one moment that could have changed the entire narrative of the match, it arrived inside the penalty area when Youssef Ezzejjari found himself just six yards from goal.
A superb delivery from Bipin Singh presented Ezzejjari with what looked like a certain goal. But in a moment that summed up East Bengal’s recent struggles, the striker failed to convert the chance.
It was arguably the clearest opportunity of the match, and missing it proved costly.
Apart from that moment, East Bengal generated several half chances but none that truly tested the Goa goalkeeper. Many attempts came from outside the box, reflecting the frustration of a team unable to unlock a stubborn defense.
The pattern is becoming familiar. Just days earlier against Jamshedpur FC, East Bengal missed multiple clear chances and eventually paid the price.
Once again, poor finishing meant valuable points slipped away.

3. Could a 4-4-2 Have Changed the Game?
With the match drifting toward a stalemate, questions will be asked about Bruzon’s tactical decisions.
As the clock ticked down, East Bengal continued to push forward but without a real sense of urgency or structural change. Many observers felt the team could have switched to a 4-4-2 formation earlier in the second half to increase their attacking presence inside the box.
Introducing David Lalhlansanga alongside Ezzejjari could have created more pressure on Goa’s defenders. Instead, Lalhlansanga was given just a brief five-minute cameo near the end of the match.
With wide players stretching the pitch and someone like Anton Søjberg operating behind two strikers, East Bengal might have created more chaos inside the penalty area.
But the tactical shift never came.
In a short 13-match league format where every point matters, such decisions can often define a season.
4. Saul Crespo’s Absence Continues to Hurt
Another factor that became increasingly evident was the absence of midfield leader Saul Crespo.
Without Crespo’s control and composure in the middle of the pitch, East Bengal’s midfield looked slightly disjointed.
Miguel struggled under heavy marking from Sahil Tavora, while the rest of the midfield lacked the creativity needed to unlock Goa’s defensive setup.
Naorem Mahesh Singh, returning from injury, started the match but looked short of rhythm. Although he produced one excellent delivery that led to Ezzejjari’s missed chance, he was otherwise unable to influence the game significantly.
Crespo’s ability to dictate tempo, link play, and control transitions appears to be something East Bengal are currently missing badly.
5. Defensive Pairing Continues to Shine
Despite the attacking frustrations, one positive takeaway for East Bengal was the impressive defensive partnership between Anwar Ali and Jeakson Singh.
The Indian centre-back duo has quietly become one of the team’s biggest strengths this season.
With Kevin Sibille still recovering from injury, Jeakson has stepped in admirably and delivered consistent performances.
Alongside him, Anwar Ali has once again demonstrated why he is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Indian football. Calm under pressure and dominant in duels, he ensured Goa rarely created clear chances on the break.
Their performances have given Bruzon the flexibility to deploy more foreign players in attacking positions, knowing that the defensive foundation remains strong.

Title Race Pressure Mounting
With this result, East Bengal now sit on seven points from four matches—two wins, one defeat, and one draw.
In a league consisting of just thirteen matches, dropped points can quickly become costly.
Meanwhile, title rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant and Jamshedpur FC have already won their opening three matches, creating an early gap at the top of the table.
The margin for error is rapidly disappearing.
Next Stop: A Must-Win Against Kerala Blasters
East Bengal’s next challenge comes against Kerala Blasters FC on March 14.
For Bruzon and his players, the equation is simple: win or risk falling further behind in the title race. The bigger question, however, is whether the team can rediscover its attacking sharpness and tactical flexibility.
In recent press conferences, Bruzon has often spoken about issues off the pitch. But as the league progresses, supporters will expect solutions on it.
The Salt Lake faithful remain hopeful, but patience is beginning to wear thin.
If East Bengal want to remain serious contenders this season, the response against Kerala Blasters must come at once.
