McLaren joined Mercedes and Ferrari as race winners in 2026 after Lando Norris delivered his first win of the season at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Norris started on pole but lost the advantage to teammate Oscar Piastri on the opening lap. George Russell’s car went into anti-stall at the start, dropping him to P21. Further back, Max Verstappen overtook Charles Leclerc for P3, Lewis Hamilton moved up to P4, Leclerc slipped to P5, and Andrea Kimi Antonelli climbed to P6.
Ferrari attempted to undercut Hamilton by pitting him on lap 14. Hamilton emerged ahead of Arvid Lindblad. Verstappen pitted a lap later and came out behind Hamilton — but the undercut fell apart when Valtteri Bottas retired on lap 15 with brake overheating, and Verstappen dramatically overtook both Liam Lawson and Hamilton on lap 16.
Norris took the lead on lap 17 when Piastri pitted. Leclerc also pitted that lap, promoting Antonelli to P2. On lap 18, the Italian youngster became the race lead as Norris made his stop, with Norris emerging in P4 behind his teammate. A lap later, both Piastri and Norris passed Isack Hadjar, who had briefly held P2.
Antonelli dropped to P6 after switching to hard tyres on lap 23, handing the lead back to Piastri. Russell, recovering from his lap-one anti-stall, worked his way up to P7 around this point.
Piastri pitted again on lap 34 and dropped to P5. On lap 39, under blue flags, Carlos Sainz made contact with Piastri, costing him time; Piastri was audibly furious over team radio.
McLaren pitted Norris for the second time on lap 40, and he rejoined in P3, ahead of Piastri. When Verstappen made his second stop, Antonelli briefly became race leader.
Norris took the lead from Antonelli on lap 46 and held it for the remainder of the race. Sergio Perez retired on lap 52 with a left-front issue.
Piastri retired on lap 56 with a gearbox failure, triggering a late Virtual Safety Car (VSC). Verstappen and Antonelli stayed out to hold P2 and P3, while Ferrari pitted both cars under the VSC. Hamilton was handed a five-second penalty for speeding in the pit lane.
Norris led to the finish, taking his first win of the 2026 season. Verstappen finished second and Antonelli held on for third, ahead of Hamilton — though Hamilton’s pit-lane penalty dropped him to fifth, behind teammate Leclerc. Hadjar finished sixth, with Russell recovering to seventh after his opening-lap anti-stall. Lawson took eighth, Nico Hulkenberg ninth, and Lindblad tenth.
Sainz received a five-second penalty for his collision with Piastri; Ollie Bearman was given the same sanction for ignoring blue flags.
