India played out a goal-less draw against lower ranked Mauritius

Manolo Marquez’s tenure as the Head Coach of the Indian Football Team did not kick-off as he hoped, with the Blue Tigers playing a goalless draw against the traveling Mauritius side at the GMC Balayogi stadium in Hyderabad. The Intercontinental Cup tournament is viewed as part of India’s preparation for the upcoming Asian Cup Qualifiers in March and has raised several concerns.

Despite high expectations surrounding Marquez’s appointment, there were no noticeable changes in the team’s playing style. India however, is scheduled to play 6-7 matches and the players too will get ample time to understand the new coach’s philosophy. With that being said, familiar issues particularly in goal-scoring persisted. At Indian Football Casuals, we delve into five key talking points from the game.

5) Rahul Bheke captains India for the first time

With the retirement of the iconic Sunil Chhetri, who was long celebrated as the “Captain, Leader, Legend,” the captaincy mantle was passed to goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu by former coach Igor Stimac during an away game against Qatar. However, in Marquez’s first match in charge, Amrinder Singh was chosen to start in goal, prompting Marquez to hand the captaincy to  the former Mumbai City FC captain Rahul Bheke.

4) Marquez’s reliance on familiar faces

Manolo Marquez made history as the first foreign coach of the Indian Football Team with prior experience in Indian Football, having managed Hyderabad FC and FC Goa. In his debut game, he chose a starting XI composed of players he had previously coached at these clubs. While this decision suggested his trust in familiar faces, it also hinted at a cautious approach. As Marquez becomes more acquainted with the wider pool of Indian talent, it is expected that he will gradually integrate more players into the squad.

3) Indian players’ lack of fitness

The Indian Football season has only just begun, with most clubs treating the Durand Cup as a pre-season tournament. In the pre-match press conference, Marquez highlighted the lack of ideal physical condition of the players, which became apparent in the second half of the game. The lack of match fitness was a significant factor in the team’s inability to sustain intensity throughout the match, a concern that needs to be addressed as they prepare for more competitive fixtures in the upcoming windows.

2) Lack of penetration and finishing

One of the most glaring issues in the match was India’s inability to break down the Mauritius defense, despite their lower ranking. The Indian forwards struggled to penetrate through the opposition, managing only one shot on target throughout the entire game. This lack of cutting edge in the final third continues to be a recurring problem for the team and will be a major focus area for improvement under Marquez’s tenure.

1) India dominates possession

Despite the disappointing result, there were some positive takeaways. India dominated possession with 65% compared to Mauritius’s 35%, offering a glimpse into Marquez’s preferred style of play giving us a glimpse of playing styles in the upcoming games.
