Punjab FC has made quite the statement in their second Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, winning their first three encounters in a dramatic and relentless fashion. Under the leadership of Greek head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis, the team has managed to find a way to overcome different challenges, match by match, opponent by opponent.
While the victories have been anything but straightforward, given the squad at their disposal, Punjab FC has displayed an uncanny ability to adapt and thrive in different circumstances.
But how were all three games different? How did Punjab FC find their way everytime? How did they do it? Let’s take a closer look at how Dilmperis and his squad have navigated these initial hurdles and set the stage for a promising season ahead.
Kerala Blasters vs Punjab FC: A Game of Tactics
The opening match of the season saw Punjab FC face off against the tactically astute Kerala Blasters at the Jawahar Lal Nehru Stadium in Kochi. This was more than just a clash of two teams; it was a battle of wits between two tactical masterminds – Mikael Stahre and Panagiotis Dilmperis. Both teams were cagey, unwilling to concede an inch, with each side waiting for the other to blink first. It was a game of patience, one where mistakes would make all the difference.
Just when the match seemed to end in a goalless draw, Leon Augustine drew a late foul to hand Punjab a penalty in the 86th minute. Captain Luka Majcen coolly slotted home to give his side the lead. But football has a way of keeping things interesting, and in injury time, Kerala’s Pritam Kotal produced a stunning cross for Jesus Jimenez to equalize.

It looked like Punjab had let the win slip from their grasp. But as they say, fortune favors the brave and despite the clock ticking towards the end of the game Punjab worked for a winner again. That was when Kerala’s defense faltered again just minutes later, allowing Punjab to sneak in a last-gasp goal and walk away with all three points.
Punjab FC vs Odisha FC: Tactical Superiority
Next up was Odisha FC, a team boasting an impressive squad and led by Sergio Lobera, a coach known for his attacking brand of football. On paper, this match looked like a mountain for Punjab FC to climb. However, in a surprising twist, Dilmperis outclassed Lobera tactically, making Odisha look uncharacteristically flat and uninspired.
Odisha didn’t manage a single shot on target, a rare occurrence for any team under Lobera’s watch. Punjab FC, on the other hand, created chance after chance, leaving Odisha’s defense scrambling. While the final scoreline only showed a 2-1 win for Punjab, the game could easily have ended with a much more emphatic margin on any other day. Goals from Nihal Sudeesh and Leon Augustine sealed the victory, though Punjab’s wastefulness in front of goal was the only real downside to an otherwise dominant performance.
Punjab FC vs Hyderabad FC: A Test of Patience and Physicality
For their third match, Punjab FC faced Hyderabad FC, a team in transition but not lacking in spirit. Many expected an easy outing for Punjab, given their momentum from the first two games. But Hyderabad, under Thangboi Singto, had other ideas. Despite fielding a team made up mostly but not entirely of Indian players, Hyderabad put up a fight, particularly in the midfield where they physically challenged Punjab at every turn.
The game was open, with both teams looking for the breakthrough. Punjab found it through Pulga Vidal, whose perfectly curled free-kick in the first half gave his team the lead.
In the second half, Hyderabad pushed hard, dominating possession and trying to exploit any weakness in Punjab’s defense. But the Shers stood firm. Their patience was rewarded late in the game, as a clinical counterattack, led by Croatian midfielder Filip, put the result beyond doubt.
The Panagiotis Dilmperis Blueprint: Flexibility and Grit
Three games, three wins, three different challenges — and Punjab FC, under Panagiotis Dilmperis, has answered every call. Whether it’s winning the tactical chess match against Kerala, outmaneuvering the attacking might of Odisha, or outlasting the physicality of Hyderabad, the Shers have proven that they can adapt to whatever is thrown their way.
Dilmperis has built a team that embraces every challenge and never stops looking for a way to win. They’re gritty, they’re flexible, and they believe in their coach’s methods. As the season progresses, it will be exciting to see how Punjab FC continues to evolve under Dilmperis’ leadership.
Punjab FC now have a 3 week rest before they take on another high-flying ISL side Bengaluru FC side post the International break.
