East Bengal may have suffered yet another defeat, their eighth consecutive loss, and sixth in a row in the Indian Super League (ISL), but the team’s performance under Oscar Bruzon against Odisha FC is showing glimpses of potential. While the 2-1 defeat was a tough pill to swallow, especially given the circumstances, Bruzon can take heart from the attacking flair his side displayed, particularly in the opening half.

Positive Signs Despite Another Setback

In the buildup to the game, Bruzon focused on instilling a positive, attacking mentality in his squad. His tactical approach was clear—high pressing, quick transitions, and an emphasis on playing a high defensive line. For the first 20 minutes, it worked wonders. East Bengal came out of the blocks faster than they have at any point this season, pinning Odisha FC back in their own half and creating a number of clear-cut chances. In fact, had it not been for Odisha goalkeeper Amrinder Singh’s heroics, East Bengal could have easily been up by two or three goals within the first fifteen minutes.

The game’s intensity was evident from the start. East Bengal’s pressing left Odisha rattled, with the visitors struggling to string passes together. The likes of Dimitrios Diamantakos and Madih Talal were relentless in their pressing, and the midfield, marshaled by the experienced Saul Crespo, took control early on. Oscar’s men looked sharp, hungry, and full of attacking intent. They were playing the kind of football that the East Bengal faithful have longed to see all season—high-energy, forward-thinking, and full of purpose. However, the highline got exposed and East Bengal did concede due to a defensive lapse from Hijazi Maher, the positive mentality of the side made sure that Oscar’s men fight for a comeback and they did before the stroke of half-time as Diamantakos equalised from the spot.

Fitness Issues and Injuries Take Their Toll

However, despite their promising start, East Bengal’s Achilles heel surfaced once again—fitness. For all the dominance they showed in the opening half, it became evident as the game wore on that they were physically unable to maintain the same level of intensity. The injuries plaguing the squad didn’t help their cause either. With a key player like Naorem Mahesh missing and several others lacking full match fitness, East Bengal struggled to keep up as Odisha found their rhythm.

The second half saw a noticeable drop in East Bengal’s intensity. The high pressing of the first half was replaced by deep defending, and Odisha began to take control. It was no surprise when East Bengal’s fatigued legs led to defensive lapses, allowing Odisha to eventually net the winner with Mourtada Fall climbing highest and score from a set piece move. Bruzon’s side tried to mount a comeback, but with no energy left in the tank and with Provat Lakra being sent off with twenty minutes remaining, making it ten versus eleven on the pitch, they couldn’t find a way back into the match.

Plenty of Positives for Bruzon

While this defeat added to their already difficult ISL campaign, there were plenty of positives to take from the performance. East Bengal showed in the first half that they have the ability to dominate games against quality opposition. The tactical approach was spot on, and the players demonstrated the hunger and desire that has been missing in previous outings. Oscar Bruzon can be proud of the effort his team put in, especially given the challenging circumstances.

AFC Challenge League: An Opportunity to Rebuild

With the Indian Super League on a temporary pause for East Bengal until November 9, when East Bengal take on newly promoted Mohammedan Sporting, Bruzon will now shift his focus to the AFC Challenge League. This tournament provides East Bengal with a crucial opportunity to regroup, improve fitness levels, and work on refining their attacking and defensive structures. In many ways, it will act as a preseason within the season for Bruzon and his squad.

The physical demands of the AFC Challenge League will give East Bengal the chance to build the stamina and fitness required to compete for the full 90 minutes, something they’ve struggled with in recent weeks. Additionally, the tournament will allow Bruzon to experiment with new tactical combinations, particularly in attack, where East Bengal have at times lacked creativity and precision. Strengthening defensive solidity will also be a key focus, as their high-line defense, while promising, still needs refinement to avoid the kind of lapses seen against Odisha.

Looking Ahead to the ISL Return

Looking ahead, Oscar Bruzon will be encouraged by what he saw in that first half against Odisha. There’s no denying the talent in this East Bengal squad, and with time, fitness, and a little bit of luck with injuries, they can turn their fortunes around. The AFC Challenge League may just be the platform they need to rebuild confidence and find their winning formula.

As the ISL season resumes in November, East Bengal fans will be hoping that their team emerges from the AFC Challenge League rejuvenated and ready to finally break their losing streak. If they can maintain the level of intensity and attacking intent seen in the first half against Odisha while improving their fitness and defensive organization, there’s every chance that Oscar Bruzon’s side can turn the corner and start climbing up the ISL table.
