In a significant development, 20-year-old midfielder Maheson Singh Tongbram is on the verge of signing with Indian Super League (ISL) side Chennaiyin FC, Fieldvision can exclusively confirm. This move follows his recent departure from Punjab FC, where he terminated his contract mutually earlier this week.
Maheson has been a part of Punjab FC since the RoundGlass group took over the Minerva Academy setup, playing a crucial role in the team’s youth setup. Known for his tenacity and composure in attacking midfield, the Manipur-born player was instrumental in Punjab FC’s success in the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) last season.
His performances earned him a spot in the squad that represented the club in the Premier League Next Gen Cup in the United Kingdom.
Despite his potential, Maheson found limited opportunities under head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis this season, with established players like Vinit Rai, Nikhil Prabhu, and Ricky Shabong ahead of him in the pecking order. This lack of game time prompted his decision to seek greener pastures.
A source close to the matter revealed, “Maheson will sign a contract with Chennaiyin as the coaching staff sees him playing an important role for the remainder of the campaign.”
Chennaiyin FC, currently managed by Owen Coyle, has been struggling this season. The team finds itself in ninth position on the ISL table, three spots adrift of the playoff spots.
With just one win in their last five games, the Marina Machans are in dire need of reinforcements to turn their fortunes around. Maheson’s addition is expected to provide depth and flexibility in midfield as the club eyes a late push for the playoffs.
Meanwhile for Punjab FC, this is the second exit from their squad as Mushaga Bakenga too terminated his contracted along with Maheson and retired from professional football as revealed by Fieldvision last week.
