Young defender Sumit Rathi has joined NorthEast United FC after parting ways with Mohun Bagan Super Giant, Fieldvision can exclusively confirm. Once considered one of the brightest defensive prospects in Indian football, Rathi is now set to embark on a new journey with the Highlanders in the Indian Super League (ISL).
Sumit Rathi first made headlines during his breakthrough season with ATK in 2019-20, where he played a pivotal role in their ISL triumph. His stellar performances earned him the ‘Emerging Player of the League’ award, establishing him as a key young defender in the country. However, in the subsequent seasons, Rathi found playing time hard to come by.
Under Antonio Lopez Habas last season, Rathi featured in just four ISL games, struggling to cement a regular spot in the squad. The situation worsened under new head coach Jose Molina, where he was largely overlooked. This season, he managed just one senior team appearance in the Durand Cup, further indicating that he was no longer in the plans of the coaching staff.
On social media, Rathi penned an emotional farewell to Mohun Bagan, expressing gratitude for his seven-year association with the club. His heartfelt note read:
“Some journeys are bigger than just football—they shape your life, your identity, and your soul. For me, that journey began at Mohun Bagan. Seven years ago, this club gave me my first professional contract, my first dressing room, my first roar from the Mariners in the stands.
Today, as I take this difficult step forward, my heart is full of gratitude, love, and endless memories… Mohun Bagan is not just a club—it is an emotion, a legacy, a family. And no matter where life takes me, I will always be a Mariner at heart. This is not goodbye—this is just a heartfelt thank you for the most incredible years of my life. Joy Mohun Bagan!”
A source close to the development confirmed Rathi’s next move, stating, “After terminating his contract with Mohun Bagan, Sumit has now signed for NorthEast United FC”
With his defensive solidity and past experience, Rathi will be hoping to revive his career at NorthEast United FC and regain the form that once made him one of India’s most promising defenders.
Mohun Bagan Super Giant are currently leading the ISL table with a 10 points gap over FC Goa. With 43 points in 19 games Jose Molina’s are looking to ease past the ISL Shield title.
Moreover for Juan Pedro Benali’s side, they have some difficult fixtures to navigate inorder to solidify their position in the points table.
