As the season inches closer to its climax, East Bengal finds itself in a precarious position. Despite boasting a promising start under the guidance of head coach Oscar Bruzon, the team’s push for a top-six spot in the league and progression in the AFC Challenge League quarterfinals has faltered due to glaring administrative lapses. A closer look at the situation reveals how the club’s management has failed to provide the necessary support and reinforcements to help the team compete effectively.
Broken Promises in the Transfer Window
When fans were assured of reinforcements in the winter transfer window, hopes were high for an overhaul of the squad’s weak links. However, no replacement was brought in for striker Cleiton Silva, who has struggled to deliver consistently.

Similarly, defender Hector Yuste, who was expected to provide stability at the back, has failed to impress, and his replacement never materialized. The absence of these key signings has left the team vulnerable in crucial matches, costing valuable points and momentum.
Along with that, defender Hijazi Maher also suffered a major injury blow and is out of action till at least the end of the season and the management is yet to look for a replacement for him, in turn binding coach Oscar Bruzon’s options in every match his team plays.
A Silent Winter: Only One Signing Amid Multiple Gaps
Perhaps the most baffling aspect of East Bengal’s transfer strategy was their inactivity during the winter window. Apart from signing Richard Celis as a replacement for the injured Madih Talal, the club didn’t bring in a single new player despite glaring gaps across the squad. No reinforcements for the defense, no backup for injured key players, and no depth added to the midfield or attack. This lack of urgency has left Oscar Bruzon struggling to make do with a depleted roster in one of the most critical phases of the season.

Delayed Replacement for Madih Talal
Even the signing of Richard Celis, Talal’s replacement, came frustratingly late. During the busy December-January fixture congestion, Bruzon was often forced to field only three foreigners in the starting lineup, undermining the team’s ability to compete on equal footing with opponents boasting a full quota of overseas players. This delay not only affected squad depth but also disrupted team chemistry at a time when stability was most needed.

No Backup for Injured Saul Crespo
The absence of Saul Crespo has been a glaring issue for over two months, leaving a gaping hole in East Bengal’s midfield. With no definitive timeline for his return, the lack of a replacement has hampered the team’s ability to control games and create chances. This misstep has placed undue pressure on the remaining midfielders, who are struggling to manage the workload, ultimately affecting the team’s creativity and defensive solidity.

Lack of Indian Talent in Key Positions
East Bengal’s lack of depth in certain positions has been painfully evident, particularly at fullback. Bruzon has been forced to rotate players like Nandhakumar, Jeakson, Anwar, and Nishu as makeshift right-backs, none of whom are natural fits for the role.

Despite the glaring deficiency, the management failed to bring in Indian players during the transfer window to provide stability and consistency in these positions. This has led to a lack of defensive cohesion and unnecessary experimentation in crucial games.
Squandering the AFC Challenge League Opportunity

The AFC Challenge League offered East Bengal a golden chance to salvage their season, as teams are allowed to field as many foreign players as they wish. Yet, the management’s lack of urgency in replacing underperforming or injured foreigners has left the squad short-handed. Instead of capitalizing on this opportunity to strengthen the team, the club seems to have adopted a passive approach, much to the frustration of fans and the coaching staff alike.
The Impact on Oscar Bruzon

Oscar Bruzon, known for his tactical acumen, has done his best to navigate these challenges with limited resources. However, the lack of support from the management has made his job significantly harder. In a competitive league where margins are slim, the failure to provide timely reinforcements has undermined the coach’s efforts to build a cohesive and competitive side.
The Agony for East Bengal Faithfuls like every season, Persists
East Bengal’s season has been a tale of missed opportunities and unfulfilled promises. The management’s failure to address critical issues in the squad—despite clear warning signs—has left the team struggling in key moments. Oscar Bruzon, despite his best tactical efforts, has been left stranded without the tools needed to succeed.

For a club with East Bengal’s storied history, such administrative missteps are a disservice to the players, the coach, and the fans. If lessons are not learned from this season, the road ahead could remain as turbulent as it has been this year.
