Punjab FC is set to extend the contract of Greek head coach Panagiotis Dilmperis for two year, Fieldvision can exclusively confirm. Dilmperis took charge of the club at the start of the season, replacing Staikos Vergetis, and initially led the team to a strong start in their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign. However, injuries and suspensions to key players saw the team struggle in the latter half of the season, ultimately falling out of the playoffs race.
Despite missing out on the playoffs, Punjab FC’s management is convinced by Dilmperis’ vision and coaching abilities. His strong relationship with Director of Football Nikolaos Topotialis has been a key factor in the decision to extend his stay at the club.
An anonymous source close to the development stated, “Dilmperis has a fantastic rapport with the management and the players. The club believes in his philosophy and wants to build a long-term project under his leadership. The decision to extend his contract was a straightforward one.”
In an exclusive interview with Fieldvision earlier in the season, he shared insights on his football philosophy stating, “Starting with personalities on the pitch, they can play under disciplined tactics in modern football.”
Expanding on this, he described modern football as incorporating “certain ways of attacking—even if this is long balls, they should be really well-organized under a certain structure or building up from behind.” Regarding defense, he added, “Certain ways of defending that you can choose depending on the opponent. It can be 4-4-2 high press or 4-2-3-1 waiting in the middle.”
With the extension now agreed, Punjab FC has already begun planning for the upcoming season. The club boasts a talented pool of young players, whom they are eager to retain and develop further. Dilmperis will play a crucial role in shaping the squad for next season, as Punjab FC aims to make a stronger impact in the ISL.
On Thursday, Punjab FC secured a morale-boosting 3-1 victory over Hyderabad FC, with youngster Shami Singamayun making history as the youngest goalscorer for the club in ISL history. The team will now look to finish the season on a high in their final game against Mohammedan SC.
With Dilmperis at the helm for another season, Punjab FC hopes to build a competitive squad that can challenge for the playoffs and beyond. His tactical approach and ability to nurture young talent could be key to the club’s aspirations in the coming years.
