The 2024-25 Indian Super League (ISL) season is set to conclude today, and the stage for the highly anticipated ISL playoffs is officially set. Mohun Bagan Super Giant have made history by securing back-to-back ISL Shields and earning direct qualification to the two-legged semi-final alongside FC Goa, who finished in second place.
Playoff Format and Qualification
Teams ranked 3rd to 6th will compete in a single-legged knockout fixture to secure the remaining two semi-final spots. According to the ISL format:
- The 3rd placed team will host the 6th placed team.
- The 4th placed team will host the 5th placed team.
- The winners of these knockout matches will proceed to the semi-finals, where they will face Mohun Bagan Super Giant and FC Goa in a two-legged tie.
The ranking for the playoff spots saw a dramatic conclusion as NorthEast United FC, Bengaluru FC, and Jamshedpur FC all finished the league stage with 38 points each. Determining the final rankings required a step-by-step application of the ISL tiebreaker rules.
Understanding the Tiebreaker Rules
As per ISL regulations, if teams finish on equal points, their ranking is determined based on the following criteria:
a) Most number of points obtained in league matches between the concerned teams;
b) Superior goal difference from the league matches between the concerned teams;
c) Superior goal difference in all league matches;
d) Most number of goals scored in all league matches;
e) Highest Fair Play Ranking;
f) Drawing of lots by the league.
Applying these rules:
- Head-to-Head Points (Criterion a): NorthEast United FC and Bengaluru FC both accumulated 7 points in matches against each other and Jamshedpur FC, while Jamshedpur FC only managed 3 points. This eliminated Jamshedpur from the race for the 3rd position.
- Goal Difference Among the Three Teams (Criterion b): Since NEUFC and BFC had the same head-to-head points, goal difference between NEUFC and BFC in those encounters determined their ranking:
- NorthEast United FC: -2 (BFC 2-2 NEUFC, NEUFC 0-2 BFC)
- Bengaluru FC: +2 (BFC 2-2 NEUFC, NEUFC 0-2 BFC)
- Jamshedpur FC: Eliminated with the lowest points in the mini-league.
Thus, Bengaluru FC secured the 3rd position, followed by NorthEast United FC in 4th and Jamshedpur FC in 5th.
Playoff Matches and Venues
Based on the final standings:
- Bengaluru FC (3rd) will host Mumbai City FC (6th) at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru
- NorthEast United FC (4th) will host Jamshedpur FC (5th)
However, NorthEast United FC faces a logistical challenge regarding their home venue. Sources close to the development indicate that the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Guwahati is unavailable due to a recent cultural event. As a result, NorthEast United FC are expected to play their crucial playoff match in Shillong.
