After becoming the mainstay of Napoli‘s midfield under Antonio Conte, granting him the seniority and position he never had at United since emerging from the development system with Scotland, the Scotland midfielder has a strong case for player of the season in Italy.

After winning one FA Cup and one League Cup in eight seasons as a first-team player at Old Trafford, McTominay, a seasoned international football player, had to leave one of the greatest clubs in the world not only to experience actual success but also to become the catalyst for it.

McTominay’s rapid adaptation to life in Naples, a city he has embraced, and Italian football is demonstrated by his 13 goals and four assists across all competitions.

According to Conte, his team performs at its peak in a 4-3-3 configuration with wide wingers and McTominay as the most experienced member of the midfield trio (see below).

But February was a month of adjustment as Conte had to change his strategy once more due to Neres’ injury and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s move to Paris Saint-Germain.

The attacking formation was lopsided at the time, with left-back Leonardo Spinazzola occupying the wing, McTominay pushing forward from midfield, and Giacomo Raspadori partnering Lukaku up front.

McTominay’s role has been consistent throughout Napoli’s assault this season; he is the most advanced midfielder and his primary responsibility is to be a danger inside the penalty area by attacking crosses with late runs from midfield.

Any animosity or sorrow that may have existed in the immediate aftermath of his departure from Manchester United last summer has vanished without a trace. Although McTominay does not hold back when discussing his time at Old Trafford, he also does not convey that leaving has scarred him.

Rather, he recalls his early years there with remarkable composure and unvarnished candour. He is undoubtedly aware that many people may believe he was not given the same appreciation at Old Trafford, at least not by some of the managers he met and perhaps even by certain supporters.

However, he is optimistic about everything. The current Manchester United, a team that is eagerly anticipating a better, more promising future, nevertheless infantilises its own players. Even as they entered their late twenties, Jesse Lingard and Marcus Rashford were still being discussed as promising players.

Local child Pasquale Mazzocchi has given McTominay the moniker “McFratm,” which translates to “McBrother” or “McBro” in Neapolitan. He thinks this is a better nickname than “McTerminator” and “MacGyver.”

They reflect just how much love McTominay got from the Napoli fans once he arrived at Naples airport to complete his move from United last summer. In a customary Naples welcome, hundreds of supporters waited for the 28-year-old before swarming him upon arrival.

However, when Napoli hurried to add players in August to appease their infamously irate boss, few people—possibly even outside of Conte—could have predicted such a significant influence.

The Castel Volturno training facility was still haunted by the memory of their catastrophic 2023 Scudetto defence.

But by the end of October Napoli were top of the division and embroiled in a three-way title war with Inter Milan and Atalanta, and McTominay was at the centre of practically everything positive they accomplished.

By that time, McTominay had already been dubbed “Braveheart” by the fans, and he was soon immortalised in a mural of the kind that Napoli fans save for their favourite players—most notably Diego Maradona.

He has now become the player he was never given the opportunity to be at United, imitating maybe the greatest football player of all time by bringing Scudetto pleasure to Naples.

Napoli was more than willing to return McTominay’s temptation. Antonio Conte regarded McTominay as the box-crashing, trouble-making motor of his midfield, so he had no misconceptions about what he was getting.

More significantly, he viewed him as a leader and an experienced player. The Italian trio of Giovanni Di Lorenzo, Matteo Politano, and Leonardo Spinazzola controls Napoli’s dressing room; their teammates are not permitted to leave the dinner table until the three have granted their consent. Nevertheless, McTominay’s arrival was viewed as a true coup. He is being evaluated for who he is, not for who he was, for the first time in his career.

However, after ten months, it seems like that is not exactly what is taking place. McTominay conveys the sense that he is at home here rather than just passing through. More significantly, he appears to be content with himself as a player who can now fully appreciate the pleasure of his moment.

McTominay’s ascent at Napoli is evidence of both his genuine talent and Conte’s ability to adjust to the kind of players in his team.
