In this piece, we take a look at ten of the most historic clashes in the Durand Cup that have been played among the two-century-old clubs.

1. 1957 Semi-final Replay – East Bengal 3 – 2 Mohun Bagan

The earliest recorded Derby in Durand Cup memory was a replayed semi-final in 1957. East Bengal edged past Mohun Bagan in a thrilling 3–2 victory, with Balaram, Balasubramaniam, and Moosa on target, while Chuni Goswami and K. Pal replied for Bagan. A fiery introduction to the rivalry on this platform. 

2. 1960 Final – Mohun Bagan 1 – 1 East Bengal (Replay Still Drawn)

The two giants squared off in the 1960 final, which ended in an initial 1–1 draw, followed by a goalless replay. In an unusual twist, both were declared joint winners, with Mohun Bagan keeping the trophy first due to a coin toss. 

3. 1972 Final & Replay – East Bengal Emerges Victorious

Held in New Delhi across two legs, the 1972 final saw a goalless draw, followed by a 1–0 replay win for East Bengal, thanks to a Mohammed Habib strike. The drama of a replayed final made it a classic. 

4. 1978 Final – East Bengal 3 – 0 Mohun Bagan

One of the most dominant Derby performances: East Bengal decimated Mohun Bagan 3–0 in the final. Surajit Sengupta scored, set up Mihir Bose, and substitute Tapan Das sealed the emphatic win in the closing minutes. A resounding title lift for the Red & Golds.  

5. 1984 Final – Mohun Bagan 1 – 0 East Bengal

Mohun Bagan struck back in 1984 by defeating their rivals 1–0 in the final. Defender Bidesh Bose provided the lone goal to tip the scales under the tactical guidance of Pradip Banerjee. 

6. 1989 Final – East Bengal Wins on Penalties

In a tense showdown, the 1989 final ended 0–0 and was decided by penalties. East Bengal edged Mohun Bagan in the shootout to lift the Durand Cup. 

7. 1994 Final – Mohun Bagan 1 – 0 East Bengal

Five years after their 1989 loss, Mohun Bagan struck again in 1994 with a gritty 1–0 final victory. As underdogs, they stunned a strong East Bengal side for their 15th Durand title. 

8. 2004 Final – East Bengal 2 – 1 Mohun Bagan

In one of the best-ever Derby finals, East Bengal overcame their rivals in dramatic fashion. Captain Chandan Das netted a brace—including a last-minute winner—to clinch the cup despite being a man down, equalling Mohun Bagan’s tally of 16 titles.  

9. 2023 Group Stage – East Bengal 1 – 0 Mohun Bagan SG

After a gap of 1650 days, East Bengal ended their derby drought in the 2023 group stage fixture when Nandhakumar scored the winner and helped East Bengal earn a memorable victory.

10. 2023 Final – Mohun Bagan 1 – 0 East Bengal

The latest chapter came in 2023 final, where the intensity returned to the final. Mohun Bagan took their revenge of the group stage defeat as they edged out East Bengal 1–0 with Dimitri Petratos finding the back of the net with Bagan playing with 10 men, to lift the Durand Cup, offering a fresh clash of titans etched into Derby lore.

As of today, in Durand Cup head-to-head, East Bengal holds 9 wins, Mohun Bagan has 8, and five draws across all encounters.
