When Oscar Bruzon arrived at East Bengal, the club was in crisis. The Red and Gold Brigade had just lost six consecutive matches in all competitions, four in the Indian Super League, morale was at rock bottom and the season looked beyond repair.

The Spaniard’s appointment was meant to bring stability and direction to a club that had struggled to find consistency since entering the ISL era. Nearly 44 matches later, Bruzon has certainly improved the team in some areas. Yet the biggest question still lingers over Salt Lake:

Where are the trophies?

A Strong Recovery from Crisis

Bruzon inherited a squad that looked completely lost during the 2024–25 season. Slowly, results began to improve. The team became more organised defensively and started collecting points again. By the end of the league campaign, East Bengal had registered 8 victories, their best win tally in an ISL season.

However, the final position told a different story.

Despite showing improvement, the team finished 9th in the league table, missing out on the playoff spots. With the quality of players available, many believed a top-six finish was the minimum expectation. The season therefore became a strange mix of progress and frustration.

Continental Success Brings Hope

If the domestic league left fans unsatisfied, continental football briefly reignited excitement.

In the AFC Challenge League, East Bengal delivered one of their most memorable performances in recent years. They defeated Nejmeh SC to top their group and secure a place in the quarterfinals of the competition. For a club that had been absent from Asian relevance for years, the run offered a glimpse of what Bruzon’s project could potentially achieve.

But again, the question followed: why could that level not be replicated consistently in domestic competitions?

The Cleiton Silva Controversy

Bruzon’s first season also produced one of the biggest off-field stories of the campaign.

His reported fallout with club captain Cleiton Silva became a major talking point in Indian football. The disagreement eventually led to the veteran striker leaving training and parting ways with the club. For supporters already frustrated with inconsistent results, the episode created the impression of instability behind the scenes.

Heavy Investment for the New Season

Heading into the 2025–26 season, East Bengal backed Bruzon heavily in the transfer market.

Several key signings arrived, including:

  • Miguel Figueira
  • Mohammed Rashid
  • Kevin Sibille
  • Hamid Ahadad
  • Jay Gupta
  • Edmund Lalrindika
  • Bipin Singh

Miguel’s arrival was particularly notable. The Brazilian playmaker had previously worked with Bruzon at Bashundhara Kings, where the duo dominated the Bangladesh Premier League. With stronger squad depth and months of preparation, expectations among the East Bengal faithful rose significantly.

Cup Competitions: A Story of Near Misses

The new season began with three cup competitions—and each produced dramatic results.

In the Durand Cup, East Bengal delivered a memorable victory against arch rivals Mohun Bagan Super Giant in the quarterfinal. Yet just when a trophy seemed possible, they suffered a shocking semifinal defeat to second-tier side Diamond Harbour FC.

The disappointment continued in the IFA Shield, where East Bengal again faced Mohun Bagan in the final. After a tightly contested match, the trophy was decided on penalties, with East Bengal finishing runners-up.

The Super Cup followed a similar pattern. Once again the team reached the final, this time against FC Goa. Once again, the match went to penalties. And once again, the trophy slipped away.

Three tournaments. One semifinal exit and two finals lost in penalty shootouts. For fans, the frustration was obvious: the team was getting close—but never finishing the job.

A League Campaign Losing Momentum

The ISL season initially offered hope.

East Bengal started the campaign with two consecutive victories, raising expectations of a serious title push. But the momentum quickly faded. A defeat against Jamshedpur FC was followed by frustrating draws against FC Goa and Kerala Blasters FC.

After five matches, East Bengal had:

  • 2 wins
  • 2 draws
  • 1 loss
  • 8 points

In a short 13-match league format, dropped points early can quickly derail a title challenge.

The Numbers Behind the Bruzon Era

Across all competitions, Bruzon’s record at East Bengal currently stands at:

Durand Cup5401154

This translates to:

  • Win rate: 45%
  • Average goals scored: 1.68 per match
  • Average goals conceded: 1.04 per match

Statistically, these are respectable numbers and represent a clear improvement compared to several previous ISL seasons. But football at East Bengal has always been about more than statistics.

Where Bruzon Has Fallen Short

Despite the progress, several criticisms remain.

1. Inconsistent League Results: While cup runs have been impressive, East Bengal have struggled to maintain consistent form in the league. A 10-6-9 ISL record reflects a team capable of competing but not dominating.

2. Tactical Rigidity: Critics often argue that Bruzon’s teams sometimes lack a clear Plan B when the initial system fails.

3. Finishing Problems: Throughout his tenure, East Bengal have frequently created chances but failed to convert them consistently.

This issue has cost the team valuable points in crucial matches.

The Pressure of Expectations

East Bengal is one of the most historic clubs in Indian football. With strong financial backing and a passionate fanbase, expectations are always high.

Bruzon has undeniably stabilised the team and brought structure to their play. Yet after 44 matches, the trophy cabinet remains unchanged. For supporters, the central question now becomes unavoidable: Is the project still building towards success—or is time slowly running out for Oscar Bruzon at East Bengal?

The coming weeks could determine whether his tenure is remembered as the beginning of a revival—or simply another chapter of missed opportunities.
